I’m currently working on a story about workers who have to work two or more jobs to make ends meet, especially in response to rising prices/costs of living. I’m also looking to speak with individuals who have experienced or are impacted by high insulin costs/insulin rationing. Workers at a Lowe’s store in New Orleans and a Home Depot store in Philadelphia, PA are headed toward holding union elections. Both home improvement retailers have reported record profits since the COVID-19 pandemic began. If successful, these stores would be the first to unionize at the chains in the US and workers are already facing significant opposition with multiple managers and union avoidance consultants descending onto stores ahead of the elections.

Immigrant workers are often used in hurricane recovery efforts. In Southwest Florida, workers are already reporting cases of wage theft, being harassed by police while not being provided with adequate bathroom facilities/housing while working in regions hit hard by Hurricane Ian.
Starbucks workers have surpassed 250 stores winning union elections as workers say the company is still delaying bargaining with unions and over 125 union supporting workers have been fired during their union campaigns. Though the NLRB/courts have ordered reinstatement for at least 11 workers so far, Starbucks continues to deny all allegations of retaliation for union organizing
